Drifting under lily pad, ripple,
his face takes on the pale and wave of grasses
and his brain the plastic fork, the mind filled
with coins from ten countries. Behind him the mess
hurries along. A siren whines by,
citizens are shouting. He will not end
his life like the boy who, flattering
his own face, thought he chased God. In the end,
it amounts to rising from his knees to walk
into horn and scraping metal, bloody
granite, the poisoned eye. God is a long way
inside that bridge just now breaking his back,
a long way inside sky, the felon
who peels back his skin to find cheap ransom.
